Edward Scissorhands has so many underlying themes it’s not funny. When finding these themes, they are really quite interesting, but i would advise against it. although they are quite insightful, most us subconsciously pick up on them anyway, and by critiquing a film like this, it takes away the magic and mystery of Edward himself. Essentially he is a collaboration of social issues that screams out the power of equality, however he is much more enjoyable as just the man with scissors as hands. Our story of Edward begins when he is taken from his isolated castle and placed in the pastel covered suburbia. Placed into entirely new surroundings, Edward becomes the new toy of the day for the residents of suburbia. Developing a love for new friend Kim (Winona Ryder), Edward spends the duration of the film developing from nothing but a foreign monster to ultimately a emotionally charged caring person. Unfortunately, with the mixture of a socially inept mind and judgemental narrow minded society, Edward never truly finds his place. Why does Edward deserve to be known as one of the greatest characters ever? contrasting a fragile character with a strong message, Burton has managed to create a character of both large likeability and meaning. Oh, and he looks so damn cool.
