#8- The Joker

Portrayed By Heath Ledger
The Dark Knight (2008)

When i first watched Dark Knight, I was impressed, but not amazed. It was until the second watching that it really hit me how well done it truly is. I think the worst thing to happen to this character was the critical response. Initially, at the films release, we had critics and moviegoers alike hyping up Ledger’s performance to the point of complete annoyance. then when awards season came round, everyone sledged the academy for giving ledger the posthumous award, belittling the win to no more than an ‘in memoriam’ nomination. Ignoring all of this, If you sit down and just watch Ledger’s screen prescence, you find the ultimate mixture of madness and badness. the purple jacket, the green vest, the face paint which has inspired hundreds of drama students and themed party goers. Nobody knows who is, and what he truly wants. Unlike most villians of Bruce Wayne, The Joker plays with Batman (Christian Bale), seeming to be always one step ahead.

In regards to Jack Nicholson’s 1989 performance in Tim Burton’s Batman, i think he did quite a well done job. But it’s nothing in comparison to Ledger’s performance. This might be because i’m quite a big fan of the masively gothic turn the Batman series has taken under the wing of Nolan. I mean, come on..look at Two Face
