Facebook: The Movie

You’re David Fincher. You blitz the 90s with films like Se7en & Fight Club and you brought in the last 10 years well recieved films including Zodiac & Benjamin Button. You’ve made films enjoyed by everyone from critics to the paying customers to the cult fanboys.

So where can you go in 2010? Well of course you accept an offer from Kevin Spacey to direct a film he’s producing. This film just so happens to be about the creation of everyones favourite thing since Myspace.

The Social Network will be coming out this October and its about the creation of Facebook. It’s not a documentary. It’s a comedy. Not only is it a comedy, it’s a drama/comedy.

Playing the god of Facebook, Mark Zuckerburg, is Jesse Eisenberg. If that name doesn’t ring a bell, Eisenberg has shown up lately as star in Zombieland & Adventureland. Also in the cast is Justin ‘yes he can actually act’ Timberlake as the President of Facebook.

Will it be any good? of course with a basis as culturally driven as Facebook, most people would assume this film is just cashing in on the next big thing (which could easily be thrown out the door as easy as MySpace was). However, one of my favourite actors, Kevin Spacey is coproducing this and assures us “The Social Network is probably going to be a lot funnier than people might expect it to be.”

Is the creation of facebook good enough to make a film about it? apparently it is, with the history of facebook being amazingly corrupt. This film should make money. Millions have facebook, and a good percentage would probably like the idea of seeing a film based on it.

You Should Check Out: The Frighteners
Peter Jackson directing Michael J Fox in a comedy horror, this film managed to go practically under the radar, despite the popularity of Fox’s Back To The Future then & Jackson’s Lord Of The Rings now. The frighteners isn’t really scary at all. I hate horror films and i managed to check this out when i was in primary school. It has the same amount of horror a Supernatural episode would have.
This film is fun. Fox plays a character very in line with Marty McFly, and manages to turn the ghosts of the film into enjoyable characters. Unfortunately i haven’t seen this film for close to 10 years, so i can’t really remember the story, but i definitely enjoyed it…so…watch it!

There will be no rescue, no intervention force. We can only save ourselves. Many of you know influential people abroad, you must call these people. You must tell them what will happen to us… say goodbye. But when you say goodbye, say it as though you are reaching through the phone and holding their hand. Let them know that if they let go of that hand, you will die. We must shame them into sending help.sike

I Love You Phillip Morris: The Film You May Never See

Did you know that at the start of 2009 a gay romance film starring Ewan McGregor & Jim Carrey was shown at the Sundance Festival? Yet the viewing public won’t get to see it any earlier than November of this year, and possibly even later.

It’s not because it’s bad (it’s apparently a well done comedy) and It’s not because it’s offensive (although it was initially a problem, with producers struggling to find a distributor. a gay comedy with Carrey & McGregor? that’s not bad). It’s because of the film producers, distributers & a $3M debt which has caused the film release to be held off until the money is paid.

So, theres a possibility that this film may never be released due to stubborn distributors, but fingers crossed this RT 84% film will see the light of day this summer.

What Went Wrong? (Wild Things)

Where The Wild Things Are (2009)

In late 2008, it was announced that Maurice Sendak’s 1963 children’s book Where The Wild Things Are would receive a large budget adaption to the big screen to be released October 2009. With Spike Jonze directing/writing, Sendak himself assisting in producing and Yeah Yeah Yeah’s Karen O signed on to produce the soundtrack, the film was set up to be a piece of children’s wonderland transformed into a stunning reality.

Months prior to the release, trailers such as these were released, using Arcade Fire in the background and shooting out tag lines such as ‘Inside all of us is… hope, fear, adventure’. The trailer made you want to see this film. Seeing the first visual evidence of the film, I myself was amazed by how stunningly true costuming and setting had stayed to the original illustrations of Sendaks 1963 work. Seeing Max Records in the wolf costume and crown, it was purely magical to see the still frames of the book running around from the ocean to the desert.

Then the film was released. Seeing it at the cinemas, i had overhyped the hell out of this film. Everything about it said ‘perfect’. Unfortunately the film missed such great heights.

To me & the thinking majority, Wild Things was a story of escapism mixed with the simple message, ‘home is where the heart is’. The book is an amazing expedition in the mind of an 8 year old boy venturing through the forests in his room, yet the film in question, put bluntly, placed the kid in the middle of group therapy.

There are 8 ‘Wild Things’ in this film. In the original book, we only really explore the strong bond Max makes with group leader Carol. However, Jonze decides to delve into the minds of these creatures, and showcases a bunch of unlikeable and joyless figures. Varying from teenage anxiety to social exile, the wild things practically represent a modern high school playground. Most of the time they don’t enjoy themselves.

This being said, there were two scenes during the journey which stood out. Both of them involved the creatures playing a game. Throwing clumps of clay etc. at each other, it was in these scenes where Jonze created an enjoyable escape from the modern dull world. However these scenes were brought back down to a lacklustre level by somebody taking something too seriously.

By the end of the film’s resolution, i found myself strongly disliking nearly all of the wild things, who’s attitude led to Max apologising for their actions.

However, this film did have an upside. Visually, Wild Things hit the nail head on. It was carefully created to be Max’s fantasy world. A forest with the tallest of trees and a desert with the finest of sand, Wild Things managed to make us enjoy being there. However, when it came to the inhabitants of the world of imagination, it seemed Jonze was saying nothing but- ‘humans can be mean, and in today’s world, a child’s escapism isn’t even enough to be untainted by the prejudice and hatred’.

So all in all, it could be said that although the story of the wild things was substantial for a picture book, when transformed into a feature film, more was needed to give it strength and meaning. Unfortunately, the new storylines and character arcs which Jonze created did not fall into place, being a complete ‘downer’ when placed next to the simple beauty that the original story entertained us with

Future Movie Review: Toy Story 3
Ok, so this isn’t really a future movie review. The film is out, and just thought you guys would like to hear the general consensus by the lucky few who have had the oppurtunity to watch and critique it.
Following in the footsteps of it’s two predecessors, Toy Story 3 has achieved a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
One glowing review comes from Variety Magazine & can be seen here- http://www.variety.com/review/VE1117942938.html?categoryId=31&cs=1
Am I excited to see Toy Story 3? Hell yes I am! It’s played a part of my life. The VHS copy of Toy Story 1 was practically broken from overplay, and seeing Toy Story 2 at the cinemas, either one of these films can be thrown on tv, and i will go out of my way to check it out just one more time.
Embracing the new fad in film, Toy Story 3 is taking the 3-D route. Seeing Avatar in 3-D earlier this year & experiencing 3-D television, the technology has definitely since the days of Spy Kids 3-D (especially the glasses). This being said, I also saw Avatar in 2-D, and my final judgement was that 3-D is an exciting novelty, however it can tend to take away from the film.
Will I see it in 3-D? If thats the only option on opening week, then yes. With such positive reviews thus far, and an 11 year wait to experience the 3rd installment, this film is bound to entertain the hell out of me, 3-D or not.
